# Tenable

## Creating a Tenable connection[​](#creating-a-tenable-connection "Direct link to Creating a Tenable connection")

To create the connection you need:

* A valid user account with appropriate permissions
* An API access key
* An API secret key

### Obtaining the credentials[​](#obtaining-the-credentials "Direct link to Obtaining the credentials")

The method to generate API keys varies depending on the role assigned to your user account.

* Administrators can generate API keys for any user account. For more information, see [Generate Another User's API Keys](#option-2--generate-another-users-api-keys).
* Other roles can generate API keys for their own account.

#### Option 1: Generate API keys for your own account[​](#option-1-generate-api-keys-for-your-own-account "Direct link to Option 1: Generate API keys for your own account")

1. Do one of the following:

   * In the upper-left corner, click the **Menu** button. The left navigation pane appears.

     1. In the left navigation plane, click **Settings**. The **Settings** page appears.
     2. Click **My Account**. The **My Account** page appears. You can view and update your account details.

   * In the upper-right corner, click the **Account** button. The user account menu appears.

     1. Click **My Account**. The **My Account** page appears.

2. Click the **API Keys** tab. The **API Keys** section appears.

3. Click **Generate**. The **Generate API Keys** window appears with a warning.

   > **Caution:** Any existing API keys are replaced when you click the **Generate** button. You must update the applications where the previous API keys were used.

4. Review the warning and click **Generate**. Tenable.io generates new access and secret keys, and displays the new keys in the **Custom API Keys** section of the page.

5. Copy the new access and secret keys to a safe location.

#### Option 2: Generate another user's API Keys[​](#option-2-generate-another-users-api-keys "Direct link to Option 2: Generate another user's API Keys")

1. [Edit a user account](https://docs.tenable.com/tenableio/Content/Settings/EditAUserAccount.htm). The Edit User page appears.

2. In the **API Keys** section, click **Generate API Keys**.

   > Caution: Any existing API keys are replaced when you generate new API keys. You must update the applications where the previous API keys were used.

3. Review the warning and click **Replace & Generate**. The **Generate API Keys** text box appears. The new access and secret keys for the account appear in the text box.

4. (Optional) Click **Re-generate API Keys**.

5. Copy the new access and secret keys to a safe location.

### Creating your connection[​](#creating-your-connection "Direct link to Creating your connection")

1. In the Blink platform, navigate to the **Connections** page > **Add connection**. A New Connection dialog box opens displaying icons of external service providers available.

2. Select the **Tenable** icon. A dialog box with name of the connection and connection methods appears.

3. (Optional) Edit the name of the connection. At a later stage you cannot edit the name.

4. Select **Secret Key** as the method to create the connection.

5. Fill in the parameters:

   * The secret key
   * The access key

6. (Optional) Click **Test Connection** to test it.

7. Click **Create connection**. The new connection appears on the **Connections** page.
